WIN BIG!

You can win the very core of the sun
by just answering this simple question:

Three deacons go to stay at the Terry Vines Motel located near the Puerto Rican Deacon Beacon Bible conference, and the man at the desk charges them $30.00 for a room.
They split the cost ten dollars each. Later the manager, Futon Williams, tells the desk man that he overcharged the men, that the actual cost should have been $25.00.
The manager gives the bellboy $5.00 and tells him to give it to the men.
The bellboy, however, decides to cheat the men and pockets $2.00, giving each of the men only one dollar.
Now each man has paid $9.00 to stay in the room and 3 x $9.00 = $27.00.
The bellboy has pocketed $2.00. $27.00 + $2.00 = $29.00
So where is the missing dollar?

  1. That's really cute, Eddie. The reason your math doesn't work out is because you have mixed in irrelevant data. The motel owner rented the room for $25.00. Each man paid $9.00 (that makes $27.00) the employee stole the other $2.00.

But I like the puzzle and it reminds me of how goofed up government gets when they try to give tax refunds back to the people. When they try to be fair, they end up being stupid and give refunds to people who paid nothing in the first place. I posted a story to illustrate this over a year ago on my blog. It is located here:

You might get a laff out of it.

  2. The equation
    (10-1)+(10-1)+(10-1)+2
doesn't make mathematical sense because the $3 was subtracted but the $2 was added when they should have been treated the same way.
    (10-1)+(10-1)+(10-1)-2=$25 (the actual total)
I'm actually still a little confused, but I don't really want the core of the sun anyways. I just don't have the room.

  3. Uuh, cause you are supposed to subtract $2 from $27 and not add it. $25 for the room. $3 refund to the visitors. $2 to the bellboy. Total money $30.

LOL. I wonder if my 4th grader could do this.

Agreeing with Ralph. This sounds like that new fuzzy math. I think Obama would have gotten an A in that class.

  4. Oh, and one more thing; Using the same kind of mathematic trickery, I have proved to every one of my grandchildren that I have eleven fingers.

I hold up both hands and ask how many fingers I have. They respond, "ten."

Then I hold up one hand and count down my fingers starting with 10.

"10, 9, 8, 7, 6," and then I raise my other hand and say "plus five equals eleven."

  5. Thanks for all the MATH! Here's what happened the following night. Two friends check into the same motel. Once again the clerk charges them $30, or $15 per person. After the clerk remembers the total rate is only $25 he sends the bellhop upstairs with five $1 bills to pay the two friends back. The bellhop knows he got away with larceny once so he tries it again. But this time he pockets $3 and returns $2 to the hotel guests ($1 per guest). So each of the two guests got $1 back from their original $15. Therefore each paid $14 which is a total payment of $28 for the room. Now the bellhop has $3, the guests paid $28, for a total of $31....THERE'S THE MISSING DOLLAR!!!!

  6. Did you change the story? What happened to the motel owner and the bellboy?

Did you think that by changing the players to deacons at a Bible conference would change the outcome?

Unless, of course, these deacons were from a church that believes in open theism or some other belief system that allows for relative or flexible truth determined by a conversation.

In which case, now you have a totally different outcome possibility. This missing dollar can be anywhere you want it to be. Or Not! Or did that dollar even exist in the first place?

How do you feel about that?

  7. Eddie,

If I really wanted to listen to this kind of twisted logic, I'd go home and have a conversation with my wife.

(If you tell her I said that, I will deny it.)

  8. I hate to say this, but Futon Williams, the manager of the Terry Vines Motel called and left a message with the answer at 5:00 pm - one minute before Ralph wrote his comment. He wins the core of the sun and wants it delivered to his Motel next Tuesday. So if anyone lives near Kakeka, Kansas...you might think of visiting a friend come Monday or so.

  9. ...and by the way, I found the dollar outside his Motel office under a discarded box of Mini-Wheats.
