Through the Freedom of Information Act it has now been disclosed that during the Civil War, the Department of the Navy secretly called upon Charles Finney to teach ship-fitters this special skill.
It was thought that this staring technique could be employed in welding together sections of metal for the new "ironclad" ships. The project was only marginally successful, however, and they ended up fitting the metal armor onto the warships using glue made from pine sap.
