Who Be Me?

  1. I really thought that would be a little bit harder than it was. Yes, it is Mr. Finney. At age 29 under George Washington Gale, Finney studied to become a licensed minister in the Presbyterian Church.

  2. So ironic that he was a Presbyterian.

He was actually a mason???? Never heard that before. I'll remember that the next time a Finneyite mentions the dreaded Servetus.

  4. I have to give Finney credit: he never got divorced. He was widowed twice.

  6. Good one, Patience. His eyes would freak me out too.

  7. Finney came to believe that part of his oath as a Master Mason was immoral and that Masonry was dangerous to civil government, evidenced by the alleged murder of William Morgan.

(for more info see Wikipedia - from where I copied the above sentences.)

  9. Yeah, but being a Presbyterian (which I am not one--Reformed Baptist am I), he didn't agree with their theology either. Y'all have read, of course, Phil Johnson's reiteration of that little incident......

  10. I may have related this here before. But for readers who haven't seen it....

In a Q.& A. session, R.C. Sproul was once asked whether he would classify Charles Finney as a "heretic." R.C. replied, "I would never call a distinguished preacher such as Finney a 'heretic.' He was an ARCH-HERETIC. He could out-Pelagian Pelagius, himself!"

The link didn't work for me, but I remember having read Phil's article.
