Widget In or Widget Out

Some have noticed the Top Commentators widget has been acting like an angry Arminian. It seems to change it's mind with the weather. I have loaded and reloaded it and always get - "Bad Request Error 400" each and every time. Blame it on my kerosene-powered computer, my ignorance of protocol, or blame it on the fact that I am living in Kuwait.
(There are more restrictions here than in the States)
Whatever the reason, this fidgety widget can be a little frustrating to those who pay attention to it. For that I apologize and thought I would put it to a vote.

If you can accept a fallen widget in a fallen world vote YES.
If you want this widget to be banished to the Isle of Patmos vote NO.

I would love some feedback and/or suggestions.

  1. It hasn't seemed to be acting up lately, at least not for me...:-\

  2. It seems to me that the ghost of SamWise is haunting that particular widget.

  3. You Calvinists are all alike! I helped invent this widget and it works a whole lot better if you would just become a Finney fan. Bozo.

  4. I think the trouble is with the top two. It goes haywire because of the altitude.

  5. That's cool, a fallen widget in a fallen world is ok. Does it have an redepmtive qaulities?

  6. Strange, somehow I'm number six now...Oh well. :-D

  7. Muhahahahahahah!!! Weep, yes, weep, little Calvinists! WEEP! WEEP! WEEP! WEEP! WEEEEEEPPPPPP!!!!

  8. I do know this:
As of right now I have 7,095 comments. The widget is based on only 5,000. Every comment posted on my blog seems to effect the others...and my coffee is getting cold.

  9. It seems to like me. I say KEEP IT!

:D A little bias going on here.

Plus, I think it has really upped your comment stream. I remember when there used to be only one or no comments on some posts, and now on a daily basis I'm seeing them in the teens. That's a good thing, broken widget or not, right?

  10. Ah, now I understand. :D Is it true that SamWise is top because of all the comments he has left in the past (before the widget came onstage)?

  11. I have passed by alter ego and am content. However, I agree with CG that it has encouraged your readers to comment. So my vote is to keep it.

  12. If those prior two seemed self-serving...ok they were.

Since they were self-serving, do I have to tip my waiter?

  14. Funny, apparently the widget had been up there for a while before I even noticed it, and even then I never paid attention to it until I happened to see that my friend SamWise and I were right there at the top. (Before that, I hadn't noticed that Stranger was even on the list). That brought back memories of the time when SamWise and I were often the only bloggers submitting comments.

I say leave it up as long as it is generating interest. Besides, I want to see how that horse race turns out ; )

"I remember when there used to be only one or no comments on some posts, and now on a daily basis I'm seeing them in the teens."

That is probably because a lot of teens are on Spring break now.

  16. stranger, that deserves both a guffaw and a LOL.

  17. I say keep the widget. If it doesn't seem to make sense sometimes, call it a paradox.

Speaking of which, I changed my screen name shortly after the widget appeared. I thought I would lose my standing under the old screen name, but the widget seems to be giving me credit under both names now.

So, THEOparadox will ultimately leave more comments than Derek Ashton, but Derek Ashton will always be ahead of THEOparadox because in a sense THEOparadox IS Derek Ashton (yet they are two distinct screen names with two different tallies). See, it's a paradox.

  18. I guess keep it. It does seem to wig out a lot, I had forty-something comments on time and now only twenty-eight. But it's not about competition or anything so let's just keep it, I have fun watching people race up the list.

  19. Oh, and look at that, Mr. King is a Calvinist! He must write a novel with a evil ghost of Jacobus Arminius haunting a Calvinist seminary and the students who must fight it off by reading from the "Institutes" and "Bondage of the Will"! It'll probably be close to 1,000 pages.(Lemme guess, he's Neo-Reformed and loves Mark Driscoll...)

  20. Eddie,

I think the sheer quirkiness of the widget adds to the charm & humor of CC. That is better than having something that may only tempt us to compete for highest number of comments. Just a thought.

  21. @Stranger

It was just a Van Tilian rant. Read it 15 more times, and it will become less clear each time. :)

  22. I'd thought about posting and re-posting this comment about a 100 times, just to "test" the widget (maybe crash it?) and hopefully rise to the top of the list, but that seemed a little self-serving...

So I'll just do it once and hope the widget screws up and puts me in the number one spot by default!

I don't think many 'teens' frequent this blog (I'm not counting myself). They ought to, though: then they could get good theology and entertainment, which is almost non-existent in our culture today. :)

  24. There's a coupla teens on here, I don't count for the spring break part because I graduated last year, but I'm still technically in the "teens" for two more years. And hey, I love theology and entertainment, something CC consistently provides.

  25. King is wrong, it's not a ghost, the widget has finally achieved A.I. and is asserting itself.

  26. The comments on this post are great.

Hmm, we've had two famous authors visit us...Interesting.

  27. Will you give it a rest, Dean! It's gotta be a ghost, not an evil robot widget. Get real, please.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hold on there Steve, don't get your pages in a ruffle, this widget is probably just trying to trick you into thinking it's not sentient!

  29. Hey, guys that's not very loving...you should all just be nicer to each other.

  30. Yeah, love, Bell is right, that's how to have your best life now.

  31. Eddie,

Only a southern baptist would count the number of comments made on his blog...

Keep it or dump it; it mattereth not to me.

As Jimmy Stewart would have said, " Say Say Say Save some room for me near the top, 'cause I I I'm a commenting fool!

  32. Dudes, you got it sooo wrong. It's not a ghost or an artificial intelligence. It's like, an alien, man! Keep the widget, it's our only contact with the little green dudes. Whoa...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Let me tinker with that widget an if it refuseth to repent I'll ping the naughty thing on mine forge!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Why not leave the top posters with their 15 mins of fame. I'll never get there, but I don't mind.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I say keep it folks.

  44. @Rob Bell

    That's "widget" not "wedgie".

  45. I just think it's hilarious that Benny Finney is on the list. How many alter egos can claim that kind of fame? So I say leave it if only for humorous effect.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ok - Harry Tix and Hippo Crit are on there too, but still...

  47. Hey! That's not very loving! I know how to spell wigdgitt!
