I have the REAL Harold O.J. Brown book and I love it. It is one of the best books I have ever had on the history of theology. I get your point about the state of evangelical Christianity today.
I teach world history in a public high school. I teach A LOT of theology in the process, especially when I cover the Reformation, and have referred to that book. I tell kids you can't understand world history without a grasp of some theology! Too bad most modern churches don't get that!
