Most of you may not remember Bob Harrington. He was a very famous evangelist who, quite frankly, became a crook. He says so in his testimony. You can read it here.
I enjoyed listening to him when I was young in the Lord. He was bold with the Gospel and his sermons were anything but boring. But, like many who succumb to fame and fortune, Bob let his ego become his god. He toured with Madalyn Murray O'Hair, the atheist, and would "debate" her on stage. It was a sham. You can read about it in "My Life Without God", by the atheist son, William J. Murray - now an ordained minister.
His daughter has written a very interesting piece entitled, "The Prodigal Father". You can read it here.
I post this for your consideration. I hope to God he has truly returned. What do you think?
There is joy in heaven over one sinner who repents. it does not matter what we think. In the final analysis the Lord knows our hearts and we follow Him individually. remember Peter was told to follow Jesus and not spend time looking and speculating about the future and lives of others. We must follow Him and be concerned about Him and His righteousness.

I had been on all the major talk shows such as Donahue and Oprah, as well as having my own syndicated TV show across the country. DeleteIt's fun being saved? How in God's holy name did he(bob)come up with that speel. T hat is a lie straight from hell. T here may be joy in the. Lord but I challenge anyone to find the word fun..pouring that lie"it's fun being saved it is exactly why his ministry went off track. It took me forty years to realize it wasn't truth..thy word is truth.........
DeleteI actually saw this guy in person several years ago. He was a visiting speaker at a church in my town. He spoke a message of a humble man. He confessed his shinanigans of earlier years. It was all very believable. The message wasn't doctrinally profound but it was effective because he was showing God's grace as it had applied to his own life. Is it real? Only God knows.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I will say for him is that, assuming he is real, what a place to minister. Bourbon Street would be in the heart of hell, spiritually speaking. This is one of the best places to get access to lost folks in all of the US...
I gave my life to Christ as a sergeant in the Marine Corps, September 8, 1972 at a Christian Servicemen's Center where I heard Bob Harrington's testimony from a reel-to-reel tape. The Lord used his story to speak to my need of Jesus. I have since served the Lord as a Navy chaplain (retired), and presently am the pastor of a church in California. Praise the Lord!

DeleteI rejoice that bob has repented,but he needs to sit in the pew and not stand in the pew as how he went about having fun or did he...........
FYI, He studied many years at the New Orleans Baptist Seminary before answering the call to serve those on Bourbon St. We need more like him accepting the Lord's call and taking action.

ReplyDeleteI listened to Bob Harrington's testimony album, "My Life Story," as a 9 or 10 year old kid and when it was finished i went out back of house and told Jesus I would do whatever He asked me to do. I knew I was called to preach that day. I preached my first sermon when I was 16 and have been preaching for the past 38 years. I wept when I heard Bob had fallen away and I wept when I heard he had come back.

DeleteNo preacher I ever heard had it all like bob did...as a kid I went to his crusades and was honored to be in his company from time to time....the devil had to take him down he was to bold and positive about being saved than anyone else....I wish he hadn't fell but I am a much better Christian because of him...I still listen to the old vinyl albums where I find great wisdom and confidence...
ReplyDeleteI remember Bob from the early 70s when a friend of mine went to New Orleans with a small group of young men from a Bible school in New York to meet him and share the gospel with people on Bourbon Street. My friend really liked Bob and was sad when Bob stopped walking with the Lord. Of course, my friend and I have grown spiritually and doctrinally over the last 40 years. We both are heavily grounded in the Doctrines of Grace, but I have no problem with an evangelist saying it's fun being saved. Of course, he should let people know there are trials and testing, but we need to remember that God never lets them go beyond what we can bear. The Christian life is never dull and boring and it can be fun being saved.
ReplyDeleteI gave my life to the Lord at a Bob Harrington Crusade at the San Diego Sports Arena around 1972. I don't credit him for that because I knew that I was going to bow to the gospel before I even got there that night. Bob Harrington was culturally different from me in every way. He wore plaid pants, shirt, hair and had white shoes. I was a surfer from San Diego. I have been a pastor for 30 years. ReplyDeleteMy father and step mother took me to a to a Bob Harrington Crusade in the early 70's when I was a long haired teenage boy. I had to listen to this self-righteous hypocrite bisexual pedophile state he couldn't tell the difference between male and female (men and women) if they the they had long hair and wore jeans.

In the upcoming Netflix movie about Madalyn Murray O'Hair called 'The Most Hated Woman in America,' Peter Fonda will play him as 'the most hated preacher in America.' It should be very interesting if they stick to their real story of crooked debates to cash-in during the '70s.
DeleteAfter observing Marjoe Gortner, Jimmy Swaggart, Bob Harrington, and many believers and unbelievers I've know personally over the decades, I have concluded that the spectrum of morality contains believers and non-believers at every level. A person's faith seems to be only randomly related to their kindness.
